Andy Fusco & "Sassy" Sarah Vaughan – “You’ve Changed”

If, as “Pops” [Louis Armstrong] asserts –“Jazz is who you are” – then the music on this video tribute to The Art of the Alto Saxophone is Andy Fusco.

The tune is Bill Carey and Carl Fischer’s You’ve Changed, a song that has a long association with vocalists such as Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.  It was also a favorite of the late tenor saxophonist, Dexter Gordon.

This track is from Andy’s Out of the Dark CD [Criss Cross 1171] on which he is joined by trumpeter Joe Magnarelli [who lays out on this cut], Joel Weiskopf on piano, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Billy Drummond.

Over the years, horn players like the great tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Ben Webster have maintained that a familiarity with a tune's lyrics is necessary to play ballads effectively - even to the point of singing the words to a song in your head while improvising over them.

Here's Sarah Vaughan's vocal version of You've Changed. Perhaps after you've listen to it and familiarized yourself with the lyrics, you can listen to Andy's treatment again to see how well he's done?
