It took me a while to appreciate just how good Nat Adderley was, but perhaps that's because, as this album shows, his brother's alto playing was simply transcendent.

Yusef Lateef was a wonderful addition and tthe closing track, "Cannon's Theme" is a perfect example..as Cannonball finishes his usualy witty,"we'll be back" end of set speech, Lateef comes sliding in perfectly riding the rhythm section wave laid down by Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.

Only the pianists changed, but unlike Spinal Tap to my knowledge they were never blown up. Before Austrian Joe Zawinul, there had been Victor Feldman from England (The Lighthouse live album) and Bobby Timmons (San Francisco) with "High Fly" both Cannon's introduction and Timmons' piano solo being memorable.

Through it all, you had the charming, as hip as anyone could ever be, undisputed master of the alto sax, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, who would be gone a mere 13 years after this recording at age 46.

Thanks to Shelly Manne and his great jazz club The Manne Hole in Hollywood, I was able to 10 feet from the band to hear this band and John Coltrane's quartet (McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones)within six months of each other.

Bill Baldwin, Jr.
Los Angeles
Feb. 5, 2021ExDrummerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12058935934008234280noreply@blogger.com
