Seeing the documentary "Talmage Farlow" on PBS in 1987 as a 15-year-old instantly made me a jazz fan, and I was buying Coltrane albums a month or two later. Tal's work was hard to get back then, and he remained this sort of mystical jazz icon to me. I saw him only once, in the early 1990s, playing at a tiny college in a small town on the NC/SC border, a few miles down the road from the town where Dizzy Gillespie was from. He was playing in one of those auditorium classrooms used for giant sections of freshman chemistry classes, with the audience sitting at bolted-down desks...very un-jazz kind of place, but I was thrilled to see him in person. Your post reminded me of how innovative the Red Norvo Trio was, and how underrated it remains. Tal was obviously a gifted natural, but he was quite lucky to have been discovered and nurtured by Norvo, and to have lived at a time when popular music bled into jazz and made use of skilled jazz improvisers. I'm sure there are guys around today with Tal's kind of unassuming personality and natural talent, but there isn't a jazz scene today where they could thrive. I can't see a modern-day Tal going to Berklee College of Music, fighting for gigs in the NYC jazz scene, or getting noticed and signed by what remains of the music industry.
