I first worked for Marty when at Stanford in 1986, in a concert with Stan Getz, using charts he originally conceived for Sarah Vaughn. For the next decade I was Marty's musical gofer, assistant, and student. These were among the best years in my musical life.<BR/><BR/>Why? Read the Profile again, please. <BR/><BR/>It captures his kaleidoscopic, amazingly wide-horizoned style -- and always with care, and always with taste. Marty died of cancer on a Saturday. On the Thursday prior, he called me into his last room, and told me to get my pad. Even at the end he still heard music, and wanted to get it down.
