Half and Half - Cal Tjader featuring Paul Horn

This tune is from Paul Horn's Something Blue LP and has two introductions: [1] features Cal's vibes out-of-tempo improvising on two chords over Lennie Hewitt's piano and [2] features Paul Horn's in-tempo alto sax playing a 12-bar line over a 6/8 Latin rhythm section.  The tune consists of three phrases - the first a 12-bar phrase in 4/4 [eight bars of ensemble, four bar of drum solo by the Latin rhythm section], an eight bar ensemble in 6/8 and a final eight bars in 4/4. The solos by Paul and Lonnie follow the 12 bar, 8 bar, 8 bar format.

When he taught it to us, Paul explained that the title comes from the fact that the drum half completes the ensemble/solo half of the tune.

Our quintet played this at the 1962 Intercollegiate Jazz Festival at The Lighthouse. I was 'the Latin Rhythm Section.'
