The Powerful Presence of Jazz Masters

One of the great things about listening to a Jazz Masters in an intimate club setting is the POWER you feel from being in their presence as explained in the following segment from an interview with pianist Paul Bley:

“I was sitting in New York listening to some very magnificent music and playing as an occasional sideman with some great players.” Paul started counting them off: “Ben Webster, Prez ... The first thing that impressed me was the power that most of the players had. The good players had a power which was not readily apparent on a recording. It wasn't even readily apparent from the audience; but it was apparent on the stage that these people had a hell of a wind level going. The first time I got on a bandstand with Sonny Rollins I was amazed. It was so loud that not only couldn't I hear, but I couldn't see."
